Pre-Operative Physiotherapy & Prehabilitation

Preparing your body before surgery leads to faster recovery, fewer complications and better long-term outcomes. Our HCPC registered physiotherapists deliver structured prehabilitation programmes at our clinics in Warrington, Leeds and Nottingham.

🎯

What Is Pre-Operative Physiotherapy?

Pre-operative physiotherapy, often called prehabilitation or prehab, is a structured programme of treatment and exercise delivered in the weeks before surgery. The goal is to strengthen the muscles around the joint or area being operated on, improve your range of movement, and optimise your physical condition so your body is in the best possible state before your procedure begins.

Research consistently shows that patients who complete a prehabilitation programme recover faster, regain mobility sooner, and experience fewer post-operative complications than those who go into surgery without preparation. At Iris Physio, we design personalised prehab programmes based on your specific procedure, your current fitness level, and your recovery goals.

What Your Prehab Programme Includes

Every prehabilitation programme at Iris Physio is tailored to you and your surgery. Your initial assessment will cover your current strength, range of movement, pain levels and functional ability. From there your physiotherapist will build a personalised plan which typically includes:

  • Targeted strengthening exercises for the muscles supporting the surgical site
  • Joint mobility and flexibility work
  • Pain management strategies
  • Education on what to expect during surgery and recovery
  • Goal setting for your post-operative rehabilitation
  • A home exercise programme to complement your clinic sessions

The Evidence Behind Prehabilitation

Prehabilitation is not simply a precaution, it is an evidence-based intervention with measurable outcomes. Studies show that patients who undergo prehabilitation before hip and knee replacement surgery return to independent function significantly faster than those who do not. For spinal surgery patients, pre-operative physiotherapy reduces post-operative pain levels and shortens hospital stays. Our physiotherapists stay current with the latest clinical research to ensure your programme reflects best practice.
