What to Expect from Your First Home Physiotherapy Visit

If you've never had a physiotherapist come to your home before, you might be wondering what to expect. Here's a clear, friendly guide to everything that happens — from booking to your first session.

Before Your Visit

Booking

Once you've filled in our booking form, a member of our team will contact you within 24 hours. We'll confirm your appointment time, ask a few brief questions about your condition, and let you know who your physiotherapist will be.

What to Prepare

  • Comfortable clothing — loose-fitting clothes that allow access to the area being assessed. Shorts for lower limb, vest or loose t-shirt for shoulder/neck/back.
  • A clear space — we'll need enough room to work, typically a cleared living room floor or bedroom space. We bring a portable treatment mat if needed.
  • Any relevant paperwork — letters from your GP or consultant, scan results, medication list, discharge summaries (if applicable).
  • A list of your questions — our sessions are unhurried, so bring everything you want to ask.

During Your First Session

The History (20–30 minutes)

Your physiotherapist will introduce themselves, confirm your details, and spend time asking about your condition — when it started, what makes it better or worse, how it affects your daily life, your medical history and any previous treatment. This isn't just paperwork — it's one of the most important parts of the assessment.

The Physical Assessment (20–30 minutes)

Your physiotherapist will assess movement, strength, posture and specific clinical tests relevant to your condition. This might involve asking you to perform certain movements, applying gentle pressure to joints, or assessing how you walk or climb stairs.

Explanation and Plan

After the assessment, your physiotherapist will explain what they've found in plain language, give you a working diagnosis and outline a treatment plan including realistic goals and estimated timescale.

Initial Treatment

In most cases, treatment begins in the first session — this might include hands-on manual therapy, guided exercises, or pain management techniques.

After Your Session

You'll leave your first session with:

  • A clear understanding of your diagnosis and what's driving your symptoms
  • A home exercise programme (usually written or sent digitally)
  • Advice on what to do and avoid between sessions
  • A plan for follow-up sessions

It's normal to feel slightly sore the day after your first treatment — this is a normal response to manual therapy and new exercise. This typically settles within 24–48 hours.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

This varies by condition. Your physiotherapist will give you a realistic estimate at the end of your first session. We will never recommend more sessions than we genuinely believe are needed.
