Post-Operative Rehab at Home: What to Expect from Your Physiotherapist

Surgery is one thing. Recovery is another. For many patients, the physiotherapy that follows surgery is what determines how fully — and how quickly — they return to normal life. Here's what to expect when a physiotherapist comes to you at home.

Why Post-Operative Physiotherapy Matters

Surgery addresses a structural problem — replacing a joint, repairing a tendon, removing a disc. But surgery alone doesn't restore strength, movement and function. That's what rehabilitation does.

Without structured physiotherapy, patients often plateau early — regaining basic mobility but falling short of returning to the activities they care about. With the right guidance and progressive exercise, the difference in outcomes can be dramatic.

Why Do It at Home?

After surgery, the last thing most people want to do is travel to a clinic. Pain, stiffness and fatigue make leaving the house difficult. Transport may be off limits if you're non-weight-bearing or can't drive. And the effort of getting to an appointment can wipe you out before the session has even started.

Home-based physiotherapy removes all of that. Your physiotherapist arrives at your door, fully equipped, and conducts your session in your own environment. This also means they can assess the actual context of your recovery — your stairs, your furniture, your daily movement patterns.

What to Expect in Your First Session

Your first home visit typically lasts around 60 minutes. Here's what will usually happen:

Review of Your Surgical Notes and Discharge Information

Your physiotherapist will want to understand your procedure, any precautions your surgical team has given, and your current pain levels and medications.

Physical Assessment

They'll observe your movement, assess the surgical site (checking for unusual swelling, wound healing or range-of-motion restrictions), and test relevant strength and flexibility.

Goal Setting

What do you want to get back to? Walking the dog, managing stairs independently, returning to golf? Knowing your goals shapes the whole rehabilitation plan.

Initial Treatment

In most cases, your physiotherapist will begin some gentle treatment in the first session — manual therapy, guided movement exercises, or advice on positioning and activity management.

Home Exercise Programme

You'll leave your first session with a clear set of home exercises to do between visits. These are essential — rehabilitation happens in the hours between sessions, not just during them.

How Often Will You Need Visits?

This depends on your procedure and how your recovery is progressing. In the early weeks, most patients benefit from 2 sessions per week. As you progress, this may reduce to weekly, then fortnightly check-ins.

Your physiotherapist will review and adjust the frequency based on how you're responding.

How to Prepare for Your First Home Visit

  • Have your discharge notes and any surgeon's instructions to hand
  • Wear or have available loose, comfortable clothing that exposes the surgical area
  • Clear a space in your main living area large enough to lie down and move
  • Have a chair and a mat or comfortable surface available if possible
  • Be honest about your pain levels — your physiotherapist needs accurate information to help you

Common Questions

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly with us. If you have surgical notes or a physiotherapy referral from your hospital team, bring these along — they're useful but not essential.

Is it painful?

Post-operative physiotherapy involves working with a healing body, so some discomfort is normal. Your physiotherapist will always work within your limits and will never push you past what is appropriate for your stage of recovery.

How long until I see results?

Most patients notice meaningful improvement in the first 2–3 weeks. Progress then continues steadily with consistent sessions and home exercise compliance.
